12 Maths B - Periodic Functions

Author: Rex Boggs, Glenmore High School

Here are the flipcharts I use to teach periodic functions

Caveats:

* Many of the pages are just the foundation upon which the topic is developed during the lesson, so they can look very sparse.

* At times a flipchart will contain pages from previous flipcharts. I keep these pages so I can refer back to them easily. Or I may not get to those pages in the previous lesson, and hence need them for the current lesson.

* The maximum file size is 4MB so some pages from some flipcharts have had to be deleted (usually jpg scans of documents).

* These are not the best possible flipcharts on these topics; they are the best I had time to produce (usually the night before). So there is much room for improvement.

Fraction Concepts - Flipcharts

Whole Number Flipcharts & Other Resources

Integer flipcharts

These are some ActivStudio flipcharts that I created for teaching integer operations.

Note that some of the pages are from flipcharts that I downloaded from the Promethean Planet website.

To view these flipcharts, you need to have ActivStudio on your computer. Or ...

Go to
http://www.prometheanworld.com/server.php?show=nav.16874
and download ActivInspire Personal Edition. You may have to register first.

It is a big download, about 230 MB. But it is free. And you are allowed to use this software in your classroom with any IWB, or even with just a computer and data projector.

Once it is installed, you can then open the flipcharts. And you also have access to hundreds (thousands?) of other teacher-created maths flipcharts at http://www.prometheanplanet.com/

You may have to register again as this is a different Promethean website, but once you are registered, click on Resources / Lessons etc. You will find a large collection of teacher-created Maths flipcharts. The quality varies from great to ... well, useful for ideas.

One Million Dots!

Page 1 of this flipchart contains 10,000 dots - 10 rows of 10 squares, where each square consists of 10 rows of 10 dots. 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10,000.

On page 2, I shrank the big square of dots on page 1, and then made a square that consists of 10 rows, each containing 10 of these squares, or 100 squares altogether. 10,000 x 100 = 1,000,000! So this page actually contains 1 million dots.

If you use the ActivStudio zoom tool, you can zoom in enough to see the original dots. Interesting side note - the file is only 10.02 KB.

Factors and Multiples Puzzle from Nrich

There is a cool puzzle at the Nrich website called the Factors and Multiples Puzzle, which can be found on-line at http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=5448

I have created a flipchart to support the use of this puzzle in the classroom. Enjoy!

Introduction to Polynomials

A flipchart that I have used to introduce polynomials. It includes a couple of cool pages - a page on the 'cubic' equation (like the quadratic equation, but a bit more complex) and a page on the 'quartic' equation (which is a tad more complex than the cubic equation).

Completing the Square

Here are two versions of Completing the Square - a web page from NCTM and an ActivStudio flipchart.

Introduction to Logarithms

This is an ActivStudio flipchart on introducing logarithms. It includes a fully working interactive slide rule! How cool is that.
